And while this can be seen as lack of progression, the band has made an even better record here, dialing-back some of the meandering tendencies from III for a more conscientious (yet faithfully cinematic) effort. Despite each member’s respective side project(s), years of playing together seems to have facilitated their sharing of ideas. Members Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, Alexis Georgopoulos and Scott Hewicker are quite adept at laying foundational grooves below playful guitar lines, taking turns navigating melodies. On the opener “Drop In,” layers of acoustic and slide guitar create warm interweaving tapestries that hold a candle to Jimmy Page, while minimalist piano notation seamlessly adjoins. It sets the tone for LE VOYAGE: slow, meditative acoustic psych-pop instrumentals, with a strong connotation of imagery and landscape. “Marzipan,” “Petals” and “The Lemon Tree” form a musique concrete triumvirate, sounding out eavesdropped conversations from a French dinner party, found sounds from a rumbling river, and bleeps and bloops reminiscent of a Luc Ferrari tape experiment. These succinct interludes never come off as novel and work well as pacesetters to break up the record’s lighter A-side. Sonically, everything on the record has a warm smoky haze — no doubt imparted by a selection of analogue gear and erstwhile production techniques. The sun-soaked druggy arrangements translate well with those characterizations, and “St. Laurent” demonstrates this nicely. Here, gauzy atmospherics unravel, always with the bass one leg ahead, slinking along the sinuous path to Zen-like serenity. Often critics site the Alps’ Gainsbourg (Jean-Claude Vanier) and Euro OST (Morricone) sensibility, but their Kraut-informed use of repetition is undeniable. Songs stretch out slowly and become hypnotic with every passing bar, so much so that the last 20 minutes of the album (comprising all of Side B) almost puts the space/time continuum on pause. That the Alps’ instrumental compositions are so easy to get lost in is no easy feat, and their dreaminess quality is appreciably consistent on successive laps around the pool. As cloying as it sounds, LE VOYAGE has a transformative ability where listeners wind up at a different place, (or, if you will, movie scene) from where they began. And when musicians can make records that do this, while referencing their influences so well, it’s quite an accomplishment: The Alps should take a bow." by Jon Dempsey • • • OTHER MUSIC The Alps LE VOYAGE (Type 2010) "A stunning tour de force of rustic Americana, dirty French psychedelics, and German Kraut buzz, instrumental trio the Alps manage to take the listener on an aural adventure, laidback yet expansive, living up to every facet of its ambitious title. On LE VOYAGE, they spin ten near-perfect soundscapes out of musical threads that span multiple decades, nations, and genres, yet distill them all into a moment of beauty as melancholic, sexy, and hypnotic as an epic sunset. Orchestral grandeur rubs up against pulsating rhythm beds, musique concrete sound collage mingles with psychedelic drone, and the entire record breathes with a cinematic air and a throbbing low-end that recalls the sensuality of Gainsbourg and Vannier, the creepy dread of Goblin, and the hazy pastoralist dreams of Popol Vuh. I've been absolutely floored by this album since my first listen; I discover new details with each spin, and it's one of those records that, whenever it plays here in the store, commands the attention of anyone shopping and forces them all to inquire about its origins. How much more hyperbolic praise do I need to dish out? I'll stop here; the music simply speaks for itself, and I won't hesitate in saying that this is not only one of the year's best, most beautiful albums, but is also a high watermark in the Type Records catalogue -- and looking at the intense winning streak they've been riding, that's really saying something. They are a Brooklyn based minimal electronics girl/boy duo, and began in 2004. They play analogue synthesizers exclusively. In this lecture they talk about the analogue synthesizer as the new folk instrument. The lecture is followed by a gear demo that shows that there is freedom in the minimum. Alexis Georgopoulos is a NYC-based composer & artist. As ARP, he makes liminal, minimal music, often with analog synthesizers. I've made an installation called LES JARDINS (IMPROVISATIONS FOR PIERRE ET JOHN) for the gardens. Here's how they've described the piece: ARP's "Les Jardins (Improvisations for Pierre et John)" includes eight piano improvisations composed in response to Pierre Huyghe's WIND CHIME (AFTER DREAM), an installation in the Walker Art Center Sculpture Garden, itself a response to John Cage's composition DREAM. The piano works will be audible in headphones placed within the garden. They play on a loop, first in real time, then played backwards, as if to mirror itself, further emphasizing the element of chance, a key motif in so much of Cage's work. Each of the pieces was composed with the pitch of the chimes in mind, so though the listener/participant will hear the piano in the headphyones primarily, the sounds of the outside world will also be audible. As such, the Wind Chimes are heard peripherally, with the piano and chimes interacting, forming a new "collaborative" work. Like the Chimes, which "play" as "directed" by the wind - that most invisible element in a contant state of flux - the interaction of these piano improvisations with the chimes furthers this element of chance, adding a new ingredient to Huyghe's and Cage's vision. Most recently, he released an ARP Flexi-Disc (a phonograph record made of thin, flexible vinyl sheet with a molded-in spiral stylus groove) as part of the most recent issue of WHITE ZINFANDEL magazine, recently featured in MoMA's Millenium Publications). The Alps released a limited-edition 3D Pyramid Pop-Up LP designed by Georgopoulos and visual artist Tauba Auerbach. A second edition followed, with artwork responding to Auerbach's, by Georgopoulos and designer Jiminie Ha. He also contributed an ARP track to SONGS ON CONCEPTUAL ART, a compilation of musical interpretations of Sol Lewitt's SONGS ON CONCEPTUAL ART.   In December 2010, two ARP songs formed the soundtrack to the CHANEL Paris-Byzance Pret-A-Porter runway show. A number of his pieces were used in the Soundtrack to the film OBJECTIFIED (Gary Hurstwit, 2009). Other scoring work includes his performance of an original live score for Doug Aitken's film MIGRATION, at Princeton University Art Museum and at 303 Gallery [NY] and his score for REPLICA – a Modern Dance piece featuring Jonah Bokaer & Judith Ruiz Sanchez (of Merce Cunningham & Trisha Brown Dance Companies, respectively) – which premiered at the New Museum in New York City (December 2009) and continues to tour internationally. In 2010, he released three full-length albums. Arp & Anthony Moore FRKWYS 3, his collaboration with British composer Anthony Moore, was released on the RVNG INTL imprint in April 2010. His group THE ALPS released the album LE VOYAGE in May (Type, 2010). And his most recent ARP album, THE SOFT WAVE, was released in September (Smalltown Supersound, 2010). It was named a New York Times NOTABLE ALBUM OF 2010. In December 2010, at NY gallery THE KITCHEN (NY), he curated SOUND+VISION: A NIGHT OF FILM, VIDEO + MUSIC – which included contributions from filmmakers Matt Wolf, Olivia Wyatt and Sam Fleischner, artists Tony Martin and Nick Relph, the writer Jon Savage and musicians Bradford Cox (Deerhunter, Atlas Sound), Harald Grosskopf, Sun Araw, and The Congos. 2013 will see the release of numerous new bodies of work. MORE, the next ARP full-length album for Smalltown Supersound, will feature Georgopoulos' first entire album of vocal songs. A second ARP album, to be released by RVNG Intl, will feature acoustic Classical stringed instruments and electronics. A third ARP album, titled RAGA FOR MOOG & VIOLIN - originally scored for Doug Aitken's film MIGRATION - will be released by the Root Strata imprint. Two new collaborative releases, Deep Trouble and Masks, respectively, will focus on electronics, one utilizing primarily samples, the other utilizing primarily analog synthesizers. Georgopoulos is also a published writer on art, music and design. Most recently, he has written profiles of synthesizer composer Suzanne Ciani and vanguard 70s art magazine AVALANCHE, both for ANP Quarterly. He has interviewed the harpist Alice Coltrane, the writer Kodwo Eshun, No Wave's enfant terrible James Chance, and Sound Library fetishists Broadcast (RIP Trish Keenan), among others. His writings have been published internationally in i–D (UK), V, ANP Quarterly, Tokion, Paper, Vice, Anthem, The Guardian (SF) and The Blow Up among others.
